Modeling the deep eddy field in the southwestern Mediterranean : the life cycle of Sardinian Eddies

Mardi 26 janvier 2010

Abstract
During the MATER experiment, an eddy characterized by marked Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) in its core at intermediate depth, and called Sardinian Eddy (SE), has been observed in the Algerian Basin located in the western Mediterranean Sea. Here, results from a numerical simulation allow to investigate thoroughly such structures. The formation of SEs and their [...]

Surface circulation of the Levantine Basin: comparison of model results with observations

Mardi 26 janvier 2010

Abstract
The eastern Mediterranean (Levantine Basin) hydrography and circulation are investigated by comparing the results of a high-resolution primitive equation model with observations. After a 10-year integration, the model is able to reproduce the major water masses and the circulation patterns of the eastern Mediterranean. Comparisons with the POEM hydrographical observations show good agreement. The vertical [...]

Seasonal variability of water transports through the Straits of Gibraltar, Sicily and Corsica, derived from a high resolution model of the Mediterranean circulation

Mardi 26 janvier 2010

Abstract
The variability of the water transport through three major straits of the Mediterranean Sea (Gibraltar, Sicily and Corsica) was investigated using a high-resolution model. This model of the Mediterranean circulation was developed in the context of the Mercator project.
The region of interest is the western Mediterranean between the Strait of Gibraltar and the Strait of [...]

The dynamics of the Sicily Strait: A comprehensive study from observations and models

Mardi 26 janvier 2010

The dynamics of the Sicily Strait are investigated in a comprehensive study using recent in situ observations, Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) simulations and process model results. In particular, results of a very high-resolution Mediterranean model (MED16) developed in the context of the Mercator project are described…
